Dry heat transfer is not as effective as airless saturated steam because steam transfers heat more than air. Protein is more susceptible to denaturation than in a dry environment except in a humid environment. This is why higher temperatures and longer times are required. Dry heat sterilization is carried out in a closed chamber. Larger equipment works with circulating air, for example, a ventilator circulates air to produce a constant temperature and faster heat exchange. According to the recommendations of the Pharmacopoeia and the World Health Organization, the temperature should be between 150 and 250 ° C and the sterilization time should be between 30 and 180 minutes. Due to the heat sensitivity of the sterilized goods, the following process parameters should be selected:
3 hours, 150 ° C
2 hours, 160 ° C
30 minutes, 180 ° C
These values refer only to the actual sterilization duration. Heating and cooling times must be added accordingly.
In order to monitor the dry heat sterilization process, biological indicators in accordance with EN ISO 11138-4 should be used, but the actual resistance values nowadays are not ideal for monitoring dry heat sterilization processes. There are two reasons: when sterilized by dry heat, the germ B. athrophaeus 106 (D160 ° C = 2.5 minutes) stopped growing at 160 ° C / 30 minutes, so monitoring at 160 ° C / 2 hours became impossible.
Due to their light weight, biological and chemical indicators are heated much faster than other sterilized products. It is recommended to use a thermoelectric measurement to monitor the sterilization process and place the sensor on the outside or, if possible, in the heaviest sterilized product to properly monitor the heating process.
